In the world of gaming, excitement is building for a new addition to the roguelike genre. Shape of Dreams, developed by South Korean studio Lizard Smoothie and published by NEOWIZ, is set to release in 2025, exclusively on PC via Steam.
This intriguing game blends MOBA-inspired action with roguelike mechanics, offering a unique twist on the traditional PvE environment. It aims to translate the fun of MOBAs to a PvE setting, riffing on it with roguelike mechanics, and removing the stressors of PvP.
The game features isometric 3D action similar to popular MOBAs like League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm. To enhance the gaming experience, the control scheme has been adjusted to include twin-stick controls and gamepad support.
Players can choose a character, build their play style, upgrade and customize attacks and abilities, and stack passive bonuses and items. The game encourages game-changing build synergies and features a design philosophy that allows players to do whatever they want in a PvE game.
The development of Shape of Dreams was influenced by the popularity of MOBAs in South Korea. The game's creators, Eunseop Shim, CEO of Lizard Smoothie, and studio director Kipyo Kang, are both computer science university students who are avid fans of MOBAs. Shim considers games like Hades, Slay the Spire, and Dwarf Fortress as examples of good roguelikes, while Shim favors Heroes of the Storm and Kang favors League of Legends.
Risk of Rain, and especially Risk of Rain 2, are among Shim's favorite roguelikes. Shape of Dreams is following in the footsteps of Risk of Rain, one of its biggest inspirations. The game has been in development since early 2023 and has grown its team with the addition of a few artists.
The game was positively received during the Steam Next Fest demo. It offers up to 4-player cooperative gameplay and has gained attention for its unique blend of roguelike and action RPG mechanics. The exact release date within 2025 has not been announced yet, and compatibility with other platforms such as Steam Deck remains unknown at this time.
