A substantial number of survey participants view TVDE as crucial for ensuring road safety

In a recent survey conducted by the Applied Studies Centre of the Catholic Lisbon School of Business & Economics, in partnership with the technology company Bolt, it was revealed that a significant number of Portuguese citizens are turning to TVDE services for safer and more responsible transportation options.

The survey, which polled 606 individuals through telephone interviews, aimed to understand the Portuguese perception of safety in transportation, particularly through the use of platforms for individual and paid passenger transport in vehicles not characterised from an electronic platform (TVDE).

The findings suggest that convenience (58%) and accessibility (31%) are the main motivations for using TVDEs. Interestingly, 25% of respondents cited not owning a car as a reason for their usage.

The survey also highlighted that safety is a key factor in the increased adoption of TVDEs. Almost half (48%) of respondents chose TVDE instead of other mobility options because they felt safer. This sentiment was particularly strong among those who wished to avoid public transportation where they feel unsafe (18%).

Furthermore, the survey revealed that 27% of respondents use TVDE to avoid driving after consuming alcohol. This figure underscores the role of TVDE services as an alternative to drunk driving, a significant contributor to road accidents.

In addition, the survey found that higher adoption of TVDEs is observed among women (58%) and adults under 45 years old. This demographic trend, combined with the fact that a notable share of TVDE drivers in Portugal are women, may have implications for safety perceptions and service accessibility.

The survey results also indicated that 81% of Portuguese respondents consider TVDE services an important tool for road safety, particularly in the prevention of accidents related to alcohol consumption. Moreover, more than half (51%) of the interviewees have used an application to ensure someone else's safe transportation, with 33% doing so always and 18% frequently.

While the survey did not provide direct information on the factors contributing to increased usage of TVDEs for road safety or specifically for the prevention of alcohol-related accidents, general knowledge suggests several factors likely at play. These include the availability of TVDE as a safe transportation option for individuals who have consumed alcohol, regulatory support, public awareness campaigns, and flexible accessibility offered by apps.

However, for detailed, data-supported insights, specific studies or official reports from Portuguese authorities would be necessary. The perception of safety using TVDEs is stronger among people with higher levels of education.

This shift towards TVDE services in Portugal is a positive step towards promoting road safety and reducing alcohol-related accidents. As the use of these services continues to grow, it is hoped that they will continue to play a significant role in making Portuguese roads safer for everyone.
