Advanced AI Model GPT-5 Unveiled-Comparing Its Capabilities with Rival Models
In a groundbreaking announcement, OpenAI has launched GPT-5, the latest model powering ChatGPT. This newest brain changes the rhythm of conversation from previous models, offering enhanced capabilities and user-friendly features.
OpenAI is making the GPT-5 reasoning-capable model available to everyone, including those on the free tier. The model comes in three variants: GPT-5 Pro, GPT-5 Mini, and GPT-5 Nano, each designed to balance speed, cost, and depth of reasoning.
New developer features include free-form function calling, verbosity controls for response detail, and a "reasoning effort" toggle to switch between fast answers and deeper analysis. GPT-5 also includes a real-time router that decides which approach to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and user intent.
For Pro users, integration with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts is now available. Users can also choose from four new personalities and customise chat colours, thanks to user experience upgrades.
GPT-5's launch marks the latest step in a seven-year climb, following GPT-1, GPT-2, GPT-3, GPT-3.5, InstructGPT, GPT-4, and GPT-4o. Notably, GPT-5 generally outperforms other leading AI models like Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1, Google DeepMind's Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Elon Musk's xAI Grok 4 Heavy on most key benchmarks, especially in coding, math, and reasoning tests.
Voice mode is being unified into an "Advanced Voice" system that better understands instructions and adapts its speaking style. GPT-5 is also capable of handling text, images, and voice in the same chat.
The rollout begins immediately for all user tiers, with enterprise and education customers gaining access next week. One of the most significant changes in GPT-5 is the "safe completions" approach to sensitive requests, which attempts to provide the most helpful answer possible within safety limits, rather than outright refusing if it cannot help.
GPT-5's "thinking" mode produces far fewer hallucinations than GPT-4o or the o3 reasoning model. The model's hallucination rate is more than seven times lower than GPT-4o's in OpenAI's medical benchmark. Pricing for GPT-5 is $1.25 per million input tokens with a 90% cache discount and $10 per million output tokens.
Despite its advancements, GPT-5 is not yet autonomous or truly artificial general intelligence. However, it represents a significant leap forward in the field of AI, offering a more trustworthy and versatile tool for a wide range of tasks.
