Affordable New SUV Debut: BYD Unveils Sealion 06 with Base Price at $19,540
In the ever-evolving world of automobiles, Chinese automaker BYD continues to make waves with the introduction of its latest offering, the Sealion 06. This new SUV, part of BYD's Ocean lineup, has been making headlines with its affordable price point and variety of powertrain options.
The Sealion 06 is available in a total of five variants, comprising three electric vehicle (EV) variants and two plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants. The EV models use BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo, with powertrains including a single motor 170 kW (228 hp) option, among others. The PHEV variants utilize BYD's 5th-generation DM technology, combining a 1.5L engine and electric motors with Blade battery packs of different capacities.
Regarding pricing, the starting price for the Sealion 06 is approximately RMB 139,800 (around $19,540 USD). This applies broadly across the hybrid and pure electric variants, though there may be differences at higher trim levels within the available configurations.
The Sealion 06 measures 4,810 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, 1,675 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. It was officially launched at an event held today.
The Sealion 06 EV is based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform, offering single-motor and dual-motor options, with battery packs of varying capacities and ranges. The hybrid Sealion 06 DM-i, on the other hand, is equipped with BYD's fifth-generation DM (dual mode) hybrid technology, powered by a 1.5L engine with a maximum power of 74 kW and a single motor with a peak power of 160 kW.
The Sealion family, which includes the Sealion 07 EV, Sealion 07 DM-i, Sealion 05 DM-i, Sealion 05 EV, and the Sealion 06, has been a significant contributor to BYD's success. In June, the Sealion family sold a record 34,757 units, contributing 9.08 percent to BYD Group's NEV sales of 382,585 units. In the first half of the year, the Sealion family sold 134,070 vehicles. These strong sales are expected to become a new growth engine for BYD's Ocean lineup, which sold 1,030,820 vehicles in the first half of the year.
The first model in the Sealion family, the Sealion 07 EV, was launched on May 10, 2024. The Sealion family has accumulated total sales exceeding 5.2 million units, with the Song Plus and Seagull each surpassing 1 million units in sales.
With the Sealion 06, BYD continues to expand its offerings in the affordable electric and hybrid vehicle market, providing consumers with multiple choices balancing electric-only and hybrid powertrains, starting just under $20,000 USD in China.
