AI Aids Kazakhstan's Petroglyph Preservation Effort

Kazakhstan, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, is taking strides to preserve its extensive collection of petroglyphs. Recent findings include several large clusters in Jetisu, notably around the Koksu river. An AI solution, VLM, is being developed to assist in this preservation endeavor.

The project, showcased at the Digital Bridge forum, is a collaboration between Yandex Qazaqstan, Kazakh-British Technical University students, and the 'Petroglyph Hunters' foundation. Students are training VLM on a substantial dataset gathered by the foundation, with support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

VLM can identify petroglyphs, generate descriptions, and restore poorly preserved images. It was unveiled by Timur Shalekenov, head of Yandex Qazaqstan, during a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The interactive map created by the project offers geographical coordinates, descriptions, and historical periods of petroglyph sites.

Volunteers from 'Petroglyph Hunters' have made significant contributions in searching for and preserving petroglyphs, including establishing the Eurasian Natural Park of Petroglyphs 'Arkalan' in Almaty. Kazakhstan is estimated to have over 300 large sites and potentially around 1500 clusters in total, making it a country of significant petroglyphic heritage.

President Tokayev has emphasized the preservation of these national treasures, leading to the cooperation between Yandex Qazaqstan and 'Petroglyph Hunters' fund. The AI solution and interactive map are expected to greatly aid in this preservation effort, ensuring Kazakhstan's petroglyphic heritage is safeguarded for future generations.
