In the future, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence tool may provide insights into your health and aging using nothing more than a selfie. Dubbed "FaceAge", this innovative tech estimates your biological age - not your birthday, but your cellular health - without flattery or insult.

Researchers at Mass General Brigham in the US trained the FaceAge AI model on nearly 59,000 faces to create this breakthrough technology. They published their findings in the prestigious The Lancet Digital Health journal.

Applying FaceAge to about 6,200 cancer patients revealed some fascinating insights. These individuals, on average, looked about five years older than their actual ages, and they tended to have higher FaceAge readings than those without cancer. Surprisingly, the model also aided doctors in accurately predicting short-term life expectancies for cancer patients receiving palliative care.

"Age difference compared to your chronological age matters," explained one of the study's authors, Hugo Aerts, director of the AI in medicine program at Mass General Brigham.

FaceAge's Potential Uses

The researchers envision a future where FaceAge isn't just a tool for cancer patients. It could become an "early detection system" for a variety of health issues, supporting doctors and patients in navigating complex health decisions.

"As chronic diseases are increasingly recognized as age-related," says Dr. Ray Mak, one of the study authors and a cancer physician at Mass General Brighing, "it becomes essential to be able to accurately predict a person's aging trajectory."

Limitations and Future Work

Although FaceAge holds immense potential, it has some limitations. Primarily, the AI model was developed using predominantly white individuals, and the effect of factors such as lighting and makeup on results remains unclear. The researchers are currently expanding their study to include diverse patient populations and testing FaceAge's accuracy across datasets featuring plastic surgery and makeup.

The use of FaceAge in a medical setting still seems far off, but according to Dr. Mak, it "could usher in a whole new realm of biomarker discovery from photographs."
