AI technology from MTS aids in Economic Monitoring across Kamchatka
In the heart of Russia's Far East, Kamchatka Krai, a region known for its pristine natural beauty, is witnessing a technological leap in environmental risk management. Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), a leading telecommunications operator in Russia, has been investing in digital and AI technologies for various sectors, and now, they've turned their attention to environmental monitoring.
MTS's latest initiative involves the development of a unique AI-driven system for air and water quality monitoring. However, as of August 2025, there are no specific publicly available search results detailing the latest developments in this area, specifically in Kamchatka Krai.
The current search results cover topics such as environmental clearance and impact assessments related to India, industrial updates in the Russian Far East without focus on AI or environmental monitoring in Kamchatka, and climate change impacts on coastal communities in India. None provide detailed information on MTS’s application of AI/ML for environmental monitoring in Kamchatka Krai.
However, it is known that MTS prioritizes the protection of natural heritage in Kamchatka Krai. They are actively training eco-volunteers and supporting eco-initiatives from business representatives.
The AI-driven system developed by MTS predicts negative environmental impact from specific pollution sources 48 hours in advance. It uses meteorological models and maps of pollutant concentrations, built using combinations of the most advanced forecasting models in the scientific community. The initial data for mathematical modeling in the system includes data from measuring equipment, information about sources of pollutant emissions, and ecologically significant data from global forecasts.
The system also includes compact air monitoring posts that detect concentrations of gases, particles, temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed, and direction. Analytical buoys for water monitoring in the system determine the concentration of oxygen, pH, salts, turbidity, oil product control, ammonium ion activity, and water level (river flooding).
This system is the first domestic technological development with AI analytics and machine learning for environmental monitoring of air and water quality. MTS is the first operator to receive a license for environmental monitoring of soil and water. The service enables continuous monitoring of the ecological situation, prevention and investigation of environmental violations, and minimization of financial and environmental risks.
The solution combines Big Data analytics and mathematical calculations. MTS has added its own development of the "System for Proactive Management of Environmental Risks" platform to the Unified Register of Domestic Software. The service is currently undergoing the procedure for inclusion in the Register of AI Solutions of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
