Revamped Gaming Experience Awaits: Nintendo's Switch 2 to Hit Shelves on June 5, 2025

Japanese gaming titan Nintendo recently announced a 43% drop in profits for its fiscal year ending March 2023, but it's full steam ahead as they gear up for the release of their next-gen console, the Switch 2, on June 5, 2025.

Nintendo's earnings for the fiscal year amounted to ¥278.8 billion ($1.9 billion), a significant decline from ¥490 billion in the previous year. Revenues followed suit, dipping 30% to ¥1.16 trillion ($8 billion) from ¥1.67 trillion. Nevertheless, the Kyoto-based conquerors of Super Mario and Donkey Kong kingdoms promise a turnaround with the launch of the highly-anticipated Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch, now in its eighth year of operation, has seen a downturn in demand, with the global userbase remaining above 128 million[1]. The console's life cycle usually sees a decline after the initial market saturation, but new blockbuster software keeps those numbers rising.

The Switch 2's debut is eagerly awaited, and its release is expected to bolster Nintendo's financial standing. The company anticipates selling 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026[4].

The Switch 2 will offer engaging software later this year, including new installments of The Legend of Zelda, a Pokemon title, and a Kirby game. Additionally, external software developers are also expected to add to the console's candy store of games.

Moreover, the opening of a Nintendo store in San Francisco and the Super Nintendo World amusement facility in Orlando this month will undoubtedly create a buzz around the Switch 2[4].

Nintendo is projecting a ¥300 billion ($2.1 billion) profit for the fiscal year ending in March 2026, marking an almost 8% improvement from the fiscal year that ended in March 2025, on sales of ¥1.9 trillion ($13 billion), up 63% from the previous year[4].

Behind the Scenes- The Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025. Pre-orders initially began on April 9, 2025, in the US, but were later paused due to tariffs and rescheduled for April 24, 2025, in the US and Canada[3][4][5]. In the UK, pre-orders are open for Nintendo Switch Online members without the need for an invitation[1].- The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR compatibility[3][4]. When docked, it supports up to 4K output at 120Hz with variable refresh rates. The new Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically, featuring larger SL and SR buttons, designed to enhance multiplayer gaming experiences.- The Switch 2 is backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games[3][4]. Exact details of new games are yet to be announced, but the console's backwards compatibility is a significant selling point.

The Switch 2 is poised to excite both new and existing Nintendo fans with its state-of-the-art hardware and compatibility features.
