Apple unveils groundbreaking accessibility enhancements, leveraging the strength of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence technology
In a significant stride towards inclusivity, Apple has announced a host of new features designed to make its products more accessible for people with physical and motor disabilities, speech impairments, and visual impairments.
The Apple Watch is set to become more accessible with the introduction of Apple Watch Mirroring. This feature allows users to control their Apple Watch remotely from their paired iPhone using Voice Control, Switch Control, and other assistive features. This means that users can interact with unique Apple Watch apps like Blood Oxygen, Heart Rate, Mindfulness, and more, even if they have difficulty using the watch's touchscreen.
For those with speech disabilities, Siri Pause Time has been introduced. This feature allows users to adjust how long Siri waits before responding to a request, providing more time to formulate responses.
In a move to support the Deaf and hard of hearing community, Apple has introduced Live Captions on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This feature can transcribe dialogue from phone calls, video calls, media content, and conversations in real-time. Additionally, Live Captions will be available on FaceTime, with the option for users to type responses and have them spoken aloud in real-time during group video calls.
Apple is also introducing Door Detection, a navigation feature for users who are blind or low vision. This feature, available on iPhone and iPad models with LiDAR Scanner, can help users locate, understand distance from, and describe door attributes, including whether it can be opened by pushing, turning a knob, or pulling a handle. Furthermore, Door Detection can read signs and symbols around the door, like the room number at an office, or the presence of an accessible entrance symbol.
To further enhance the user experience, Apple is adding new languages and locales to VoiceOver, its industry-leading screen reader. This includes support for over 20 additional locales and languages, such as Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese, as well as new optimized voices for assistive features across languages.
The Apple TV app will highlight movies and shows featuring authentic representation of people with disabilities. Viewers can also explore guest-curated collections from the accessibility community's standout actors, including Marlee Matlin, Lauren Ridloff, Selma Blair, Ali Stroker, and more.
Apple Maps features a new guide from the National Park Foundation, Park Access for All, to help users discover accessible features, programs, and services to explore in parks across the US. The Apple Books app will offer new themes and customization options for an accessible reading experience.
To help customers discover accessibility features on iPhone, live sessions are being offered at Apple Store locations around the world. The Accessibility Assistant shortcut is coming to the Shortcuts app on Mac and Apple Watch this week to help recommend accessibility features based on user preferences.
For those who find typing challenging, Voice Control Spelling Mode gives users the option to dictate custom spellings using letter-by-letter input. Sound Recognition can be customized to recognize sounds specific to a person's environment, like their home's unique alarm, doorbell, or appliances.
In the realm of entertainment, Apple Music will highlight the Saylists playlists, a collection of playlists that each focus on a different sound. With Buddy Controller, users can ask a care provider or friend to help them play a game on Apple devices.
Lastly, guides from Gallaudet University feature businesses and organizations that value, embrace, and prioritize the Deaf community and signed languages. SignTime, an on-demand American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter service, will launch in Canada on May 19, expanding its availability to include the US, UK, France, and soon, Canada.
These new features demonstrate Apple's commitment to making technology more accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities. By providing these tools, Apple aims to break down barriers and ensure that its products are accessible to all.
