Athletic competitions featuring football, sprinting, and fighting: debut of the first humanoid robot games in China
The World Humanoid Robot Games, a groundbreaking event in the realm of competitive robotics, took place in Beijing from August 15 to 17, 2025, at the National Speed Skating Oval, the same venue used for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
This inaugural event brought together more than 500 humanoid robots from 280 teams representing over 16 countries. The three-day competition showcased a unique blend of traditional sports, entertainment, and research, with events ranging from soccer and running to kickboxing, hip-hop dance, martial arts, medicine sorting, cleaning, and even fashion modeling.
The games were organized in an Olympics-style format, supported by the Chinese government, universities, robot companies, and even middle schools. The event aimed to highlight China’s leadership in the field and served as a platform to showcase advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence.
One of the highlights of the games was the inclusion of non-sports events such as Kung Fu and dancing, adding a cultural twist to the competition. However, a mechanical participant in the 1,500-meter run collided with a human helper, but no injuries were reported. In the soccer match, the humanoid robots frequently stumble and fall, providing a spectacle of resilience and innovation.
The World Humanoid Robot Games 2025 marked a significant milestone, being the first of its kind to focus solely on robots in humanoid form. The games are set to continue until August 16, 2027, providing a platform for future advancements in this exciting field. The event was organized by unspecified news agencies SID, AFP, AP, and Reuters, ensuring global coverage and recognition.
During the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, the fusion of traditional sports with artificial intelligence was evident in the soccer match, where humanoid robots demonstrated resilience and innovation by frequently stumbling and falling.
