Balcony Solar Power Revolution: Germany's Mini Grid Boom Reaches Million Mark
Balcony solar installations significantly increased the count of residential power generation systems twofold.
Ever since the electricity hikes following the Ukraine conflict, balcony solar setups have been on a roll. The solar industry is celebrating a major milestone.
According to reports from the market data register and the German Solar Association (BSW), the number of balcony solar installations in Germany has roughly doubled within a year, hitting a whopping one million. BSW CEO Carsten Körnig remarks, "We believe that the one millionth plug-in solar device is already operational, considering pending notifications to the Federal Network Agency."
What are Balcony Solar Setups, and How Do They Benefit Users?
Officially termed plug-in solar devices, these small solar installations can be found attached to balconies (hence the name), but location flexibility isn't a necessity. These setups are restricted to an 800-watt connection power limit. In sunny conditions, they supply power to homeowners via a socket, reducing their reliance on grid power.
The savings from these installations serve as their financial yield. Any excess power that's not consumed is féd free of charge back to the network. Those with built-in power storage are not considered plug-in solar devices, with different rules applying for them. In the analysis published by comparison portal Verivox about a month back, the payback time for a balcony power plant was estimated to be between 2.5 and 5 years. The ideal conditions include a solar-facing balcony with a slight incline and no shade on the modules.
The Traffic Light Coalition Legacy
The market data register showed 975,583 installations operational, with an additional 20,000 either temporarily or permanently shut down. It's essential to note that the figures from the register typically fall behind the actual number of balcony solar installations due to the one-month notification deadline, and some installations may not be reported despite the mandate. The half-million mark was breached in June 2022, exactly a year ago.
In a survey by Verivox, 9% of the 1007 respondents revealed they already have a balcony power plant, while 17% plan to install one. Around 21% express that they don't have enough space, and 15% find the mini-solar installation less valuable. 19% of respondents firmly oppose balcony power plants, and 40% have no specific preference either way.

"Solar panels have long been common on detached homes, but the solar boom on balconies is increasingly shaping inner-city images," notes BSW CEO Körnig. "The solar energy revolution is reaching an increasingly varied range of population groups."
Distribution Across Germany
North Rhine-Westphalia leads the nation with 194,077 registered balcony solar installations, followed by Bavaria with 148,284. Lower Saxony takes the third spot with 127,879 balcony solar installations, just barely ahead of Baden-Württemberg with 127,665.
Hesse comes in fourth with 73,898, Rhineland-Palatinate (58,085), Saxony (54,415), Schleswig-Holstein (41,106), and Brandenburg with 34,157 solar panels installed. Saxony-Anhalt (26,576), Thuringia (25,706), and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (20,838) follow. Berlin boasts 18,445 solar installations, while the Saarland clocks in at 12,130.
Hamburg lags the furthest behind with 7,202 installations, followed by Bremen with 5,118. The density is relatively low in city-states, as well as areas with fewer installation candidates.
