Bitkom Launches 'Compass IT-Standards' to Guide SMEs in EU Digital Market

Bitkom has launched the 'Compass IT-Standards', a guide designed to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in the digital sector navigate the complex landscape of European standards and norms. This publication comes at a crucial time as the European Commission reviews its standardization system and prepares for new regulations.

The guide, published by Bitkom, connects EU laws like the AI Act to technical standards, helping businesses determine which norms are relevant for their digital products in the European market. It focuses on key areas such as information security, data protection, digital identities, and artificial intelligence.

The 'Compass IT-Standards' also explains the distinction between standards and norms, and how they are created. Vera Wesselkamp, Bitkom's expert for technical regulation and standardization, stresses the need for streamlined processes to facilitate the launch of new digital products.

In parallel, the European Commission is reviewing the European standardization system. The process, which began with calls for evidence and public consultations in 2025, is expected to result in a legislative proposal around October 2025. This proposal will be discussed during meetings of the Technical Regulations Committee and Competitiveness Council.

The 'Compass IT-Standards' serves as a valuable tool for enterprises in the digital sector, providing clarity on EU laws and technical standards. Meanwhile, the European Commission's review of the standardization system aims to create a more efficient and competitive market for digital products.
