Hybrid Police Boats Debut at Hamburg's Green Port Anniversary Bash

Sustainability's the name of the game at the Hamburg Port Anniversary – and that's precisely why the city's embracing hybrid technology with open arms! On the second day of the 836th celebration, the Hamburg Fleet christened two state-of-the-art hybrid patrol boats, the "Mayor Brauer" and "Mayor Weichmann." The nautical nuptials took place in the heart of the Hamburg Harbor, where the newcomers were ceremoniously kissed by a cascade of champagne.
The Lioness of Hamburg's Economy, Melanie Leonhard (SPD), got the honor of christening the "Mayor Brauer." Actress Rhea Harder-Vennewald took the reins for the "Mayor Weichmann."
Eco-friendly ambitions stretch far and wide for Hamburg Harbor, as it eyes 2040 as the deadline for climate neutrality. To reach this milestone, the city's Fleet will gradually phase out old vessels in favor of eco-friendly counterparts.
The New Hybrids: A Step Towards Sustainability
These low-emission, hybrid ships were delivered to the Hamburg Fleet last December. They're replacing their 30-year-old brethren. Karsten Schönwald, CEO of the Hamburg Fleet, shared some details before the christening: "Our hybrid ships can run fully electric for up to two hours without a hiccup!"
The city of Hamburg's commitment to sustainability doesn't end at a single boat. To attain its ambitious goal, multiple strategies are in play:
Embracing Shore Power
Since 2016, the Port of Hamburg has been a staunch advocate for shore power infrastructure, which helps reduce emissions by allowing ships to draw power from the grid instead of their diesel generators. By 2024, the city plans to have 72 MVA of shore power capacity installed[1].
Hydrogen Highway
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is pioneering a hydrogen highway from Oman to Europe, aiming to build the infrastructure needed for importing, liquefying, storing, and shipping hydrogen – a significant step towards a greener future[4][5].
Embracing Green Technologies
Promoting sustainable technologies is a key element of Hamburg's strategy. This encompasses the adoption of hybrid systems in transportation and numerous other sectors[3].
The hybrid police boats christened by Flotte Hamburg represent the city's continued crusade for a more sustainable future, contributing to the climate neutrality goal with their eco-friendly hybrid propulsion systems. By minimizing carbon emissions, these ships align perfectly with the port's eco-friendly objectives. So, raise a toast to these green guardians, and here's to a brighter, cleaner future!
