Canada Expands Express Entry Trade Category to Attract More Skilled Tradespeople
Canada's Express Entry system has undergone a significant update to its Trade category, effective February 27, 2025. This change aims to attract more skilled tradespeople to the country, boosting its economy and labour force.
The Trade category, which previously had 11 occupations, has been expanded to include 25. This growth comes from the addition of 19 new roles and the removal of 4. Some of the new occupations include Bricklayers, Cabinetmakers, Concrete finishers, and Construction managers, among others.
To qualify for this category, candidates must have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in an eligible trade within the past three years. This requirement ensures that applicants have recent, relevant experience in their field.
The cut-off scores for the Trade category in the general draws of 2024 ranged between 433 and 436. For the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off, the range was between 524 and 549. Being selected from the Trade category increases one's chances of receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residence.
The revised Trade category, with its expanded list of occupations and clear experience requirements, is set to attract more skilled tradespeople to Canada. This update is part of the country's ongoing efforts to fill labour market gaps and support its economy.
