Canada's Solar Energy Sector Booms in 2025
Canada's solar energy sector is booming, with behind-the-meter installations thriving this year. Key drivers include investment tax credits, energy shortages, and favorable policies for home battery storage. Ontario is showing renewed interest in renewables due to expected energy shortages, while Alberta has already reported significant installations.
Alberta, for instance, has seen 43 MW of behind-the-meter solar installations and 5 MW of distributed generation in the first half of 2025 alone. Nationally, Canada is on track to surpass the 314 MW of solar deployed in 2024. The province of Alberta, according to the CanREA report, plans to install a total of 3 GW of solar energy by the year 2035.
A notable project is the 112 MW solar installation near Edmonton International Airport, expected to come online in the second half of 2025. This project, along with many others, is driven by the need to address aging infrastructure and climate change-related power bill increases.
With more than 10 GW of renewable energy procurement scheduled across Canada in coming years, the future looks bright for solar energy. Despite the rising interest in balcony solar, a technology not yet available in Canada, the country is making significant strides in its solar energy adoption.
