Canon's New EOS C50: A Compact Cinema Powerhouse

Canon is set to launch the EOS C50, a compact cinema camera that combines powerful video capabilities with efficient ergonomics and renowned image quality. The C50 is expected to redefine its category and rival the Sony FX3, catering to creator workflows and hybrid shooters.

The C50 boasts impressive specifications, including 4K up to 120 fps for high frame-rate action capture and 7K at 60 fps internal RAW for versatile post-production. It features a 32 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor, offering rich detail and framing flexibility. Additionally, it may have dual CFexpress Type B slots, dual Pixel CMOS AF II, and a 40 fps burst for stills.

The camera offers open gate recording, 15+ stops of dynamic range, and C-Log2 and C-Log3 profiles for enhanced colour grading. Unlike the EOS R5 C, the C50 trims weight and complexity, focusing on streamlined video capture. It is rumored to have a lightweight body under 700g, no EVF, no mechanical shutter, and a fully articulating LCD for easy shooting from various angles.

The Canon Cinema EOS C50 is priced at approximately €3,899.99 in Europe, inclusive of VAT, and is available for pre-order at Adorama. It is not listed directly on Amazon at launch. With its blend of cinematic specifications and efficient ergonomics, the C50 is poised to be a strong competitor in the compact cinema camera market.
