Cash Tips Preferred: Swiss Customers Reject American-Style Tipping

A study by Bank Cler has revealed that Swiss customers have distinct preferences when it comes to tipping. The traditional cash method remains the favourite, while the American-style tipping system on payment terminals leaves many confused.

The study found that 69% of people prefer cash over credit card transactions for tipping. This preference is likely due to the control it offers, as 41% of respondents do not want to set their tip as a percentage of the total price. The automatic tip systems for credit card billing, though common in some countries, are not favoured by the majority in Switzerland.

Raoul Corciulo of Vendomat suggests that customers prefer percentage tip options on cash registers. This aligns with the findings that most people dislike pre-set tip amounts on payment terminals, preferring to decide the amount themselves. The American Express-style tipping system, which often includes pre-set percentages, can therefore be seen as less appealing to Swiss customers.

The Bank Cler study highlights the Swiss customers' preference for cash tipping and their desire to control the tip amount. This indicates that the American Express-style tipping system on payment terminals may not be the most effective method in Switzerland. Businesses should consider these preferences when offering tipping options.
