CGI Desires to Aid Trump Administration in Combatting Deception

Montreal-based CGI is diving into the rough-and-tumble world of American politics. They've announced the launch of a platform designed to tackle fraud, abuse, and waste within the U.S. federal government. This move comes at a tense time, given CGI's contracts with the U.S. government account for around $2 billion, or a whopping 15% of their total revenues.

Investors are keeping a hawk-eye on the relationship between CGI and the Trump administration. The company's U.S. subsidiary, CGI Federal, is a top player in federal government consulting, ranking among the top 10 providers, according to a memo sent to federal officials in February.

Despite being in the crosshairs of the Trump administration, which aims to trim "non-essential" consulting expenses, CGI has so far managed to dodge the axe wielded by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by none other than Elon Musk.

The DOGE claims it has axed six CGI Federal contracts in February and March. The U.S. government boasts of savings of $465,000 with these cancellations, according to data from the department headed by Mr. Musk. However, the reliability of the DOGE's data has been questioned, with media and analysts uncovering significant errors and allegations of exaggerated savings.

CGI's president and CEO, François Boulanger, showed faith in the DOGE's objectives in January. "If they want to meet their targets and priorities, they will need technology," he said during a conference call with analysts to discuss the company's quarterly results.

CGI is set to release its second-quarter financial results on Wednesday. In a statement, CGI Federal president Stephanie Mango said the company is "committed" to supporting its client in its goals of reducing fraud and waste. The services offered by CGI, beyond just blocking financial losses, also help organizations enhance public trust, meet regulatory compliance, and improve service delivery and mission outcomes.

The platform launched by CGI focuses on two key areas: fraud prevention modernization and secure ERP solutions. As part of this mission, they have developed a Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Prevention Platform, an AI-powered platform that integrates fraud detection tools with CGI’s financial management system, serving over 180 federal organizations.

Despite the Trump administration’s cost-cutting initiatives, CGI's recent activities suggest strategic alignment with federal priorities, likely providing a buffer against budget pressures. In fact, CGI's shares have risen 22% in the past three years, a reflection of steady demand for federal IT modernization. Moreover, current contracts emphasize preemptive fraud detection and compliance, aligning with post-Trump-era mandates to reduce improper payments.

CGI stock was up $1.16, or 0.79%, at $147.69 on the Toronto Stock Exchange at noon.
