ChatGPT's true purposes unveiled: Over 70% of queries deviate from work-related matters, according to OpenAI's latest findings.

In a recent analysis of 1.5 million queries from ChatGPT users, some fascinating insights have emerged about the popular AI model's usage patterns.

The study, which focused on Free, Plus, and Pro subscriptions, revealed that only 4.2% of ChatGPT messages are related to programming, indicating that the tool is predominantly used for purposes beyond coding.

Instead, work-related messages account for a significant portion of the interactions. Eight-in-ten of these messages are classified as obtaining or interpreting information and making decisions or solving problems. This suggests that ChatGPT is increasingly being relied upon as a decision-making tool in the workplace.

However, it's worth noting that more than 70% of queries are non-work related. These queries often involve requests for practical guidance, information searches, and writing assistance. For instance, users have been seen asking for help with tasks like recipe searches, sports advice, and learning support.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, views the model as most valuable as an advisor rather than just for task completion. This is reflected in the fact that writing assistance, such as for emails, translation, and summarizing documents, make up 80% of all interactions with the chatbot.

Moreover, the study found that approximately 30% of consumer usage is work-related, and approximately 70% is non-work related. This underscores the versatility of ChatGPT, which is being used in private life by a significant number of users.

Interestingly, the study noted a steady growth in non-work-related messages. Since July 2025, ChatGPT has been most frequently used in private life by women, with 73% of all queries being non-work-related.

While ChatGPT has proven to be a valuable tool, there have been complaints about changes in the "voice" of the bot following a model update. Additionally, CEO Sam Altman has warned users not to treat ChatGPT as a therapist due to the lack of legal confidentiality.

About 10% of all messages are requests for tutoring or teaching, suggesting that education is a key use case for ChatGPT. The model offers value by boosting worker output by providing decision support.

Researchers noted that while computer programming and self-expression represent relatively small shares of ChatGPT usage, the study's results still highlight the creation of economic value both at work and outside of work. OpenAI has emphasized in a blog post that these findings underscore the potential of AI to transform the way we work and live.
