General Motors (GM) is recalling a whopping nearly 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential engine malfunction after a few components were found to have manufacturing defects that could cause the engines to fail.

These defective components can lead to engine damage and eventual failure, notably escalating the risk of accidents, particularly if they happen while driving. Way harsh, right?

The recalled vehicles all feature 6.2-liter V8 gas engines and consist of the 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL.

GM has been pretty frank about the situation, stating that the safety and satisfaction of their customers are top priorities. They're working hard to address this problem ASAP.

These vehicles were built between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.

The recall report mentioned by GM revealed about a dozen "alleged crashes" and the same number of "alleged injuries" in the U.S. Most of these supposed injuries were either minor or didn't involve physical harm.

Letters notifying owners of the recalled vehicles will be sent out on June 9. To rectify the issue, affected vehicles will need to undergo a dealership inspection, with engines being repaired or replaced as necessary. Once passed, they'll receive a fresh dose of higher-viscosity oil, a new oil fill cap, an oil filter replacement, and an owner's manual insert—all at no additional cost to the owners.

Notably, the recall encompasses about 721,000 vehicles globally, including those in the U.S[5]. GM's vehicle brands include Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac[6]. In the U.S., the company sold 2.7 million vehicles in 2022, marking a 4% increase from 2021[6].
