Couple Transforms Little Aston Bungalow into Stunning French-Inspired Home

A striking, timber-clad property in Little Aston, Staffordshire, has captivated locals and gained international attention. Known as the 'Maison d’Alsace' or 'French House', the 550m2 home was designed and built by French couple Sebastien and Maria Lheureux, who drew inspiration from traditional Alsatian architecture. Completed in August 2023, the £1.2m property was a labour of love for the couple, who shared their progress on Facebook and transformed a dilapidated bungalow into a luxurious haven.

The Lheureuxs, without hiring a professional realtor, created a unique design that maximises northern light and warmth from the south-facing garden. MADE Architecture later refined the design, incorporating a structural glass atrium with double-height glazing and an up-and-over glass roof. The atrium's imposing stone feature wall, softened by plants, adds a brutalist touch to the otherwise warm and inviting space. Throughout the home, ultraslim sliding glass doors create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.

The five-bedroom, two-storey home boasts multiple bathrooms, a bar/lounge, an open-plan kitchen living space, a cinema room, pitched rooflights, and a sunken drawing room. The couple's commitment to daylighting ensures natural light floods the space, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The property's timber cladding and architectural glass elements harmonise with its surroundings, making it a standout feature in the affluent Little Aston neighbourhood.

The Lheureuxs' self-built home in Little Aston is more than just a residence; it's a testament to their vision and dedication. Despite initial reservations from neighbours, the 'Maison d’Alsace' has become a local and international talking point, proving that unique, architecturally significant homes can thrive in even the most prestigious of neighbourhoods.
