Customs Raid Hotel, Catering Industry in Augsburg to Combat Black Work

Customs officials in Augsburg conducted inspections in the hotel and catering industry on Saturday, focusing on compliance with social security obligations and the minimum wage. The inspections, led by the Financial Control Black Work (FKS), targeted cafes, restaurants, and ice cream parlors in Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Kempten, and Lindau.

The inspections, involving 66 customs employees, aimed to uncover illegal employment, sham self-employment, and performance fraud. This is part of a broader effort by customs to combat black work in the industry, which has been subject to the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG) since January 1, 2024, with a general minimum wage of 12.41 euros per hour.

Customs' inspections are risk-oriented, ranging from spot checks to full inspections of all employees of an employer. They are conducted after initial checks and involve extensive follow-up inspections, comparing employee data with payroll and financial accounting, and checking further business documents. Adrian Kube, spokesman for the Main Customs Office Augsburg, emphasized the importance of customs in ensuring compliance with these obligations.

The inspections in Augsburg and surrounding areas are part of a nationwide and regional focus on particularly affected branches. Customs' efforts highlight the importance of maintaining fair labor practices and protecting both employees and employers from exploitation.
