Cybertruck Windshield Replacement: A Complex Procedure Involving Multiple Part Dismantling and Careful Sawing Out of the Old Windshield from Its Frame, According to Tesla's Warnings
In the world of electric vehicles, Tesla's Cybertruck has made quite a splash. However, one issue that has left some owners scratching their heads is the company's policy on windshield replacements for minor cosmetic defects.
Tesla advises against replacing the windshield unless absolutely necessary. The reason? Replacing a Cybertruck windshield is a complex process, likened to "surgery," due to the windshield's size—the largest in the automotive industry. It must be completely sawed out from the frame, which means even minor cosmetic flaws typically do not justify a full windshield replacement under warranty, as it could cause more problems than the defect itself.
Doug Mac, a Cybertruck owner from Michigan, found this out the hard way. He has a small manufacturing defect on the bottom left corner of his Cybertruck windshield, causing the black frit to become transparent and have an uneven edge. When he contacted Tesla to request a full windshield replacement under warranty, their response was that it might be covered, but they would need to inspect it onsite to confirm.
This response left Doug, and many other Cybertruck owners, feeling surprised and even disappointed. Some consider Tesla's reply bizarre, while others suggest correcting the blemish with a black permanent marker if nothing else is wrong. Steve Resis advises, "Let it go," while Jimmy Johnson suggests the same. Robert Whitlock encourages, "Leave it be."
However, opinions among Cybertruck owners on what Doug should do are divided. Some advise Doug to disregard the small blemish, while others feel that the defect, though minor, should be addressed. The defect does not impair Doug's visibility, but the increased wind noise above 45 mph post-replacement, which Tesla service considers normal, has led to some dissatisfaction in the owner community.
Tesla's cautious approach to windshield replacements is rooted in the invasive nature of the process. The replacement involves sawing out the old windshield and dismantling many components, which increases the risk of complications. This has led some owners to avoid replacement unless critical.
As the debate continues, we invite our readers to share their ideas in the comments. Whether you own a Cybertruck or are just a fan of Tesla and the EV space, we'd love to hear your thoughts on this issue.
