Delivery Service DoorDash is Trialing Delivery of Facebook Marketplace Goods

DoorDash partners with Meta to test deliveries via Facebook Marketplace in multiple U.S. cities. According to a DoorDash spokesperson, the companies are currently piloting this service, but they have yet to reveal the specific city locations. The test is limited to items that can fit in the trunk of a car, as DoorDash delivery drivers will handle the transportation.

Customers can place orders within a 15-mile radius. The delivery timeframe is set at 48 hours, according to the spokesperson. When asked about the inception of the pilot program and future expansion plans, DoorDash declined to provide specific details, stating instead that they are continuously exploring and testing new innovations.

This partnership marks DoorDash's continued expansion beyond just restaurant deliveries. J.C. Penney enlisted DoorDash for same-day deliveries of home products at over 600 stores back in December 2021. In the same month, DoorDash debuted its DashMart virtual convenience store brand in New York City.

DoorDash faces competition from Uber, which has also expanded its roster of same-day delivery clients. Uber, like DoorDash, has partnerships with Hims & Hers, Bed Bath & Beyond, The Body Shop, and others. In July 2021, Uber teamed up with resale marketplace Mercari to facilitate product exchanges between sellers and customers.

Meta, the social media giant, is facing a financial slowdown and is refining its e-commerce operations. In its Q2 earnings report, Meta reported a 36% decline in net income and a 1% dip in total revenue year over year. The company has announced the termination of its live shopping feature on Facebook and plans to focus on short-form videos instead. CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited Apple's iOS changes as one reason for these changes, stating that they aim to improve the customer experience of interacting with businesses on their platforms. Meta COO, Sheryl Sandberg, mentioned that the war in Ukraine, the normalization of e-commerce post-pandemic, rising inflation, and uncertainty about a looming recession are impacting their revenue.
