Dell's Branding Overhaul Leaves Consumers Perplexed
Dell's shaking up their laptop game for the new year, ditching most of their beloved branding like XPS and Latitude in favor of a simpler approach. So, what's their new moniker for their AI-powered laptops? Just plain old Dell.
Dell's laptop lineup is now split into three categories: Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro Max. Dell is for both work and play, while Dell Pro is focused on professional-grade productivity. Dell Pro Max caters to high-end performance.
Dell touts that their unified branding across their PC portfolio makes it easier for consumers to find the right laptops. But how true is that? Let's delve a bit deeper into their rebranding.
Well, the Dell XPS, Inspiron, and Inspiron Plus will now be part of the Dell lineup. The premium XPS will now be known as the Dell Premium, while the Inspiron Plus will become the Dell Plus. The Latitude, previously a staple, is now just a Dell under the Dell Pro category, which includes base, Plus, and Premium configurations.
The Dell Pro Max, on the other hand, replaces the Precision lineup and its base, Plus, and Premium configurations. So, if you’re in the market for a work laptop, you might be torn between a Dell Premium, a Dell Pro Premium, or a Dell Pro Max base model. Visually, these are distinct laptops, but their names certainly don't indicate it.
The average consumer might be overwhelmed by the numerous models and configurations available while shopping for a laptop. Dell's new branding may seem even more confusing, as it appears to be the same four words repeated in various combinations. As a long-time XPS reviewer, I'll miss the XPS, but I'll give the Dell Premium a fair shake in 2025.
