Deloitte to Partially Refund Erroneous AI-Generated Report to Australian Government

Deloitte has agreed to a partial refund for an erroneous report submitted to the Australian government. The report, which reviewed departmental IT systems' use of automated penalties in Australia's welfare system, contained inaccuracies that Senator Barbara Pocock described as 'misstating the law'.

The initial 237-page report, costing AU$440,000, was found to have up to 20 errors. These included a fabricated quote from a federal court judgment and references to nonexistent academic research papers. Deloitte confirmed these inaccuracies and has since revised the report.

The corrected version revealed that a generative AI language model, Azure OpenAI, was used in its writing. Quotes attributed to a federal court judge and references to nonexistent reports were removed. Despite these errors, the report's recommendations remain unchanged.

Deloitte Australia will partially refund AU$440,000 (NZ$499,000) for the erroneous report. The exact amount to be refunded will be made public after the repayment. The report's use of AI in its creation has raised questions about the reliability of such systems in official reports.
