Denver Appoints First Chief AI and Information Officer
The City and County of Denver has elevated the role of its Chief Information Officer, Suma Nallapati, to become its first Chief AI and Information Officer. This move signals Denver's commitment to embracing artificial intelligence across its operations.
Nallapati, with over 20 years of experience in technology leadership, will now oversee the city's strategy for scaling AI. This includes automating internal services, streamlining permit reviews, enhancing emergency response, promoting sustainable infrastructure, and improving resident engagement. Previously, Nallapati served as Colorado's Secretary of Technology and CIO, and Dish Network's Chief Digital Officer. She has already launched initiatives like the Sunny chatbot and AI solution solicitations during her tenure as CIO.
Denver joins other cities like Georgia and Vermont that have expanded top technology officials' roles to include AI duties. Mayor Mike Johnston praised Nallapati's visionary leadership, stating, 'Denver is positioning itself as the nation's most forward-thinking AI city.' As CAIO, Nallapati will focus on developing Denver's AI strategy, ensuring standards for governance and equity, and promoting transparency and public engagement on AI's ethical use.
Nallapati's new role reflects Denver's commitment to leveraging AI responsibly and ethically to improve public services and ensure technology serves all communities equitably. With her extensive experience and proven track record, she is well-positioned to lead Denver into the AI future.
