Bookshop.org Plans to Launch Dedicated E-Reader

Bookshop.org, an online bookstore that supports independent bookstores, is considering the launch of a dedicated e-reader. The move aims to expand its e-book sales by integrating a physical device with its platform and affiliate bookstores [1][3].

Michael Kozlowski, a writer who has been covering audiobooks, e-books, and e-readers for 18 years, has reported on Bookshop.org's potential e-reader venture [2]. It's important to note that Kozlowski is not directly associated with Bookshop.org.

The e-reader, if launched, would likely follow a similar commission model to Kobo's approach. Local bookstores partnering with Bookshop.org would be able to sell the device and earn commissions on e-books purchased by users of that device [1].

Bookshop.org has already established its presence in the e-book market. It launched its e-book store in the United States in January 2021 and has generated over $1 million in digital sales [1]. The company anticipates reaching $3 million in digital sales by the end of 2025 [1].

The company is also planning to offer audiobooks and has created a landing page for a potential dedicated e-reader, hinting at an imminent rollout [1]. Currently, Bookshop.org is beta testing its e-book and audiobook store in the United Kingdom, suggesting that it plans to expand its services overseas [1].

If the e-reader project materializes, Bookshop.org's partner bookstores could sell the devices locally, providing a commission opportunity for these stores [3]. However, no official release date or final confirmation about the e-reader launch or its commission structure has been announced yet.

The e-reader that Bookshop.org is considering launching could be a new addition to the technology sector, joining other gadgets such as smartphones and laptops. As the company aims to expand its e-book sales by integrating a physical device with its platform and affiliate bookstores, the e-reader could merge the worlds of finance, business, and technology. If launched, this e-reader could help independent bookstores increase their revenue through commission on e-books purchased by users of that device.
