Drone Disruptions Ground Munich Airport Flights for Second Night
Munich Airport faced a significant disruption on Friday night and into Saturday morning due to repeated drone sightings. This was the second consecutive day of airspace incursions at the airport, affecting thousands of passengers.
On Friday evening, two drone sightings near the North and South runways led to a halt in flight traffic. Services were suspended for the second consecutive night, lasting until 7 AM on Saturday. Around 6,500 passengers were impacted by the disruption. The airport worked closely with airlines to provide support inside the terminals during this time.
Earlier in the week, on Thursday, drone sightings also caused issues. A total of 17 departures were grounded, and 15 incoming flights were diverted. This incident followed a similar disruption the previous day, making it the second consecutive day of airspace incursions at Munich Airport. In total, 23 arriving flights were diverted, 12 were cancelled, and 46 departures were either cancelled or delayed.
This recent spate of incidents is not isolated to Munich. In recent weeks, other European countries have also reported airspace violations or disruptions caused by drones. Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Denmark have all been affected. Russia has denied involvement in these incidents.
Munich Airport's flight operations were severely disrupted on Friday and Saturday due to drone sightings, affecting thousands of passengers. The airport and airlines worked together to manage the situation. These incidents are part of a wider issue of drone-related disruptions across Europe, with no clear attribution yet.
