The automotive world is abuzz with the latest developments surrounding BMW's first electric M model, the M3 ZA0. This electric version of the iconic BMW M3 is expected to hit the market around 2027.

The M3 ZA0, currently undergoing testing, can be distinguished from a regular i3 ("NA0") with its bulging fenders, lower stance, and larger brakes. Its rear trunk-lid spoiler bears a resemblance to the current M3 "G80".

Recent spy shots of the M3 ZA0 reveal more details about its design. The latest iteration of the vehicle sports a reinterpreted kidney grille, expected to feature a closed-off design, akin to the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept.

The front bumper of the M3 ZA0 has some of its camouflage removed, exposing lower air intakes. However, some body sections reveal black rivets holding extra layers of camouflage in place, hinting at further design elements yet to be unveiled.

The M3 ZA0's design is draped in BMW's signature black-and-white swirly camouflage, making a clear view of the vehicle's final look elusive. One black rivet on the hood's center likely conceals the rest of the taillights.

While the M3 ZA0 does not have a 3.0-liter twin-turbo gas engine, the upcoming gasoline M3, codenamed "G84", is set to debut around 2028, a year after the EV. The G84 is expected to use a different type of inline-six, likely a mild-hybrid S58, to meet stricter emissions rules.

The M3 ZA0 has been spotted testing at the Nurburgring, and some speculate that the vehicle may ride on 20-inch rear wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires.

It's worth noting that the prototype of the M3 ZA0 is missing the final taillights and M-specific side mirror caps. This could suggest BMW could be testing a different mirror design or the prototype lacks production parts.

EVs, including the M3 ZA0, still require cooling, especially high-performance ones. The M3 ZA0's design may incorporate innovative cooling solutions to ensure optimal performance.

The M3 ZA0, as the first electric M car from BMW, promises to redefine the performance electric vehicle segment. With its distinctive design and innovative technology, the M3 ZA0 is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the BMW lineup.
