Electric Vehicle Open Payments Solution's Draft Receives Input Solicitation by EMVCo

EMVCo Proposes New Open Payment Solution for Electric Vehicle Charging

In a significant move for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, EMVCo, the global technical body for the payments industry, has released a draft document for an interoperable open payment solution for EV charging. The document, released on August 13, 2025, outlines a standardized framework for card-based open payments at EV charging stations [1].

The proposed solution aims to provide EV drivers with a seamless and universal way to pay for charging, regardless of location or charging network. This enhancement in convenience is expected to promote a new era in global mobility [1].

The draft document specifically explores the integration of EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) technology into the Plug and Charge experience, as defined by the ISO 15118 standard. EMV SRC simplifies the digital payment process by providing a more consistent, convenient, and secure way to use card credentials remotely, without physical card presentation [1].

Integration of EMV SRC technology offers several benefits. It maximizes global interoperability across diverse EV charging infrastructures worldwide. It requires no hardware changes for EV manufacturers and only limited backend integration for charging station operators (CSOs), helping reduce deployment complexity and costs. The solution is also expected to facilitate faster time-to-market for interoperable EV charging payments [1].

In essence, EMV SRC enables the cardholder's payment credentials to be securely and remotely transmitted during the Plug and Charge session, making the payment process frictionless and universal while leveraging existing payment standards and infrastructure [1].

The collaboration on this project includes EMVCo, payment and EV industry stakeholders worldwide, such as the Car Connectivity Consortium, CharIN, ISO, and the Secure Technology Alliance [1]. Patrik Smets, EMVCo Executive Committee Chair, emphasizes the benefits of open payments for EV drivers, offering increased choice and convenience [1].

The draft document is open for feedback from all interested stakeholders by Wednesday 03 September [1]. This initiative is a significant step towards simplifying the EV charging payment experience, providing EV drivers with more freedom when charging their vehicle and offering merchants confidence in accepting payments.

  1. The collaboration on EMVCo's proposed open payment solution includes various stakeholders from the finance, technology, and electric vehicle industries, such as the Secure Technology Alliance, ISO, and the Car Connectivity Consortium.
  2. The integration of EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) technology into the electric vehicle charging process, as outlined in the draft document, is expected to facilitate faster time-to-market for interoperable EV charging payments through increased global interoperability, reduced deployment complexity, and enhanced payment security.
