Projectors Offer Cost-Effective Solutions for Houses of Worship
In the modern age, video projectors have become a staple in houses of worship, offering several advantages over more complex and expensive display options such as video walls and direct-view LED displays.
One of the primary reasons for this trend is cost. Projectors generally have a lower initial purchase cost compared to their counterparts, making them a more budget-friendly choice for many churches. This is especially true when considering the lack of need for expensive modular hardware to project large images.
In terms of brightness, modern projectors can achieve high enough levels to effectively display clear images even with ambient lighting. While high-end direct-view LED displays offer superior brightness, projectors can be adequate and more cost-effective where extreme brightness is not required.
Serviceability is another key factor. Projectors tend to be easier to service and maintain than video walls or LED displays. Individual projector lamps or light sources can be replaced relatively easily and inexpensively. In contrast, video walls and LED displays involve numerous panels and complex electronics, where a single failing pixel or panel can require costly repairs or replacements.
Projectors also allow for flexible multimedia integration, supporting audio, video, film, art, and text, enabling dynamic worship presentations. They avoid the need for distributing physical hymnals or Bibles, reducing ongoing costs.
A motorized retractable screen that can be hidden when not in use is a common feature in church projects, making projectors a model of technological discretion. Retracting the screen solves the problem of visibility for church events where the video image may not be required or seen as appropriate in the space. This is not possible with a video wall or a direct-view LED display.
Carl Lukings, the proprietor of Horizon Solutions, an AV integrator/installer based in London, Ontario, has installed over 25 projectors in houses of worship. Horizon Solutions sells more projectors with a traditional lens ratio, but also sells short-throw projectors when necessary. One recommended short-throw projector for churches is the Christie Inspire DWU960ST-iS.
Video-over-IP solutions are recommended for video transport systems in church applications, ensuring smooth and reliable transmission of video content.
In summary, video projectors in houses of worship are often favored for their lower upfront and maintenance costs, sufficient brightness, and simpler serviceability compared to video walls and direct-view LED displays. This makes them a practical and economical choice for delivering immersive worship experiences without the substantial investment and upkeep associated with LED video walls.
