In a groundbreaking proposal, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has presented a plan to redesign Ethereum's architecture, inspired by Bitcoin's minimalist model. This strategic shift aims to increase efficiency, security, and accessibility within the Ethereum network.

The proposed redesign decouples key consensus processes, specifically separating fork choice from block finalization. This modular approach moves block selection responsibility to a small, randomly chosen group of validators (256 validators), while the full validator set manages finality. This change reduces communication rounds, making the consensus process more lightweight and efficient, similar to Bitcoin's focus on simplicity and robustness.

The redesign aims to improve Ethereum's network by scaling up to support up to 1 million validators, simplifying inactivity leak management, enabling faster block selection with a reduced validator subset, and maintaining high security and robust finality guarantees. The integration of STARK-based aggregation protocols further reinforces the network's decentralization and efficient coordination.

For end-users, the benefits include a decrease in fees and improvement in transaction speed, resulting in a smoother and more appealing experience. For developers, the reduction in network technical complexity would imply faster development cycles and lower error risk.

Complementary efforts, such as Justin Drake’s “Lean Ethereum,” seek to reduce protocol complexity and introduce quantum-resistant features, further enhancing security.

This minimalist-inspired redesign aligns with Buterin's vision for Ethereum to become the default infrastructure for traditional finance through secure, scalable, and simplified upgrades like the Dencun hard fork and new finality models. The proposal also aims to make Ethereum as accessible and transparent as Bitcoin, allowing a more diverse community to participate in its development and maintenance.

By drawing inspiration from Bitcoin's success, Buterin's plan seeks to recapture the essence of Bitcoin's auditable and reliable system, addressing the increasing complexity that has led to fragmentation in Ethereum's development culture. The proposed transformation presents significant technical and organizational challenges, but if successful, it could lead to a more secure, scalable, and user-friendly Ethereum network.
