Amazon Expands Same-Day Fresh Grocery Delivery Service

Amazon has announced the expansion of its same-day fresh grocery delivery service, now included in the base Amazon Prime benefits at no extra cost for Prime members. This new service allows customers to order fresh groceries like produce, milk, and ice cream from Amazon instead of Amazon Fresh, combining all orders into one cart.

Unlike Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods deliveries, which require a $9.99 per month subscription on top of your membership fee, the expanded grocery delivery service does not have any additional charges for Prime members. For non-Prime members, a delivery fee of $12.99 per order still applies.

To qualify for free same-day delivery, a minimum order of $25 is required. It's important to avoid adding impulse purchases to your cart to meet the order minimum, as this could potentially push you to spend more.

Amazon plans to add 2,300 more locations by the end of this year for the same-day fresh grocery delivery service. The service is currently available in over 1,000 cities and towns across the United States, including large metropolises and medium-sized cities.

In comparison, Target Circle 360 offers free same-day delivery with a $35 order minimum, but it charges a delivery fee of $9.99 per order for non-members. Walmart also requires a $35 order minimum for same-day delivery, but it offers free delivery for orders placed before 3:00 P.M. with same-day curbside pickup.

It's worth noting that some products are not available with the new Amazon grocery delivery service. Additionally, each membership comes with far more than grocery delivery perks, and the key to making any of them worth the annual fee is making sure the full list of perks are ones you would actually use.

For those considering whether the extra $9.99/month for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods is worth it, a test grocery run at Amazon's same-day grocery store could provide insight. Since last week, Amazon has expanded its same-day fresh grocery delivery service to over 1,000 cities and towns across the United States.

Amazon's Expanded Grocery Service: - Order minimum: $25 - Delivery speed: Same day - Delivery fee: Free with Prime ($12.99 per order for non-members) - Pickup options: No - Product selection: Food selection has a lot of overlap with Amazon Fresh, but some products vary.

Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods: - Order minimum: $35 - Delivery speed: 1-2 hours - Delivery fee: $9.99/month with Prime (on top of annual fee) ($4.95-$13.95 per delivery for non-members) - Pickup options: 30-minute pickup available - Product selection: Fresh groceries, pantry items, and household essentials. You can't combine Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods orders with your regular Amazon marketplace orders.

By offering a wide selection of perishable grocery items like produce, dairy, meat, and more, as well as the convenience of same-day delivery at no extra cost for Prime members, Amazon's expanded grocery delivery service could be a cost-effective alternative to services like DoorDash or Instacart, especially when considering the absence of extra service fees or tips.
