Expanding Optical Fibre Reach in Eight Duisburg Communities
Fiber Optic Network Expansion Begins in Duisburg
Good news for residents and businesses in Duisburg! The city is set to join the digital revolution with the imminent expansion of its fiber optic network. This expansion is part of a larger rollout by the joint venture OXG, which started digging fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure in nearby Neuss in August 2025 [1].
The expansion, being carried out by Westconnect, will bring high-speed internet directly to homes, improving broadband speed and reliability. This will enable modern digital services and smart home technologies with better connectivity. Additionally, it could potentially increase property values due to the upgraded infrastructure [1].
The rollout focuses especially on new builds and housing industry developments. Households in newly constructed or newly connected areas will be prioritized. Once the optical fiber is available, households must subscribe to a fiber service provider to connect [1]. Physical installation of fiber optic cables and necessary terminal equipment inside the home will be required, coordinated by the network operator and service provider.
The expansion is planned to extend across the Rhine to cities including Duisburg, with up to 150 cities across Germany targeted for FTTH development by the end of 2026 [1]. This aligns with Vodafone and Altice's goal to cover up to 7 million homes with FTTH across Germany, with significant investments in infrastructure development [1].
The expansion in Duisburg will benefit residents and businesses in eight districts in the north and west of the city. These include Alt-Walsum, Wehofen, Aldenrade, Röttgersbach, Vierlinden, Rumeln, Bergheim, and the Bergheim district of Trompet [2]. Around 22,000 households in Duisburg will soon be able to use fast internet as a result of the expansion.
To use the fast fiber optic internet, customers need a suitable internet tariff from "E.ON Highspeed" [2]. The fiber optic cables are led from the central distribution points to individual buildings, ensuring transmission rates of up to 1000 megabits per second [2]. Seven central distribution points have been set up for the fiber optic network, and a battery backup ensures the operation of the installed technology during power outages [2].
In conclusion, the fiber optic deployment in Duisburg is expected to begin soon, offering households significantly faster broadband upon installation with standard subscription and installation processes. The focus on new builds suggests that the gradual expansion to existing homes will follow the initial phases [1].
