Exploring the Latest Kindle Graphite: A Critical Examination
New Kindle Offers Improvements and New Features
Amazon has announced the latest addition to its Kindle family, bringing several enhancements and new features to the popular e-reader.
The new Kindle, available in Graphite and White, boasts a compact and slim design, with a size reduction of 21% and a weight reduction of 15%. It measures 7.5 x 4.8 x 0.335 inches and weighs 8.7 ounces, making it even more portable for avid readers on the go.
The device includes three new fonts - Condensed, Serif, and Sans Serif - offering readers more options for clearer text rendering. The display remains black and white, but the improved contrast makes reading easier on the eyes.
The new Kindle's battery is sealed and not user replaceable, but Amazon promises that it offers weeks of reading time on a single charge, a significant improvement over previous models.
The power button, volume button, and headphone jack are now located at the bottom of the device, making them more accessible. The side buttons are now a quarter of an inch wide and carry arrow symbols denoting forward and back, making navigation easier.
The keys on the new Kindle are more closely packed than before, and the number keys are now accessed via a symbol menu. The new Kindle does not have external memory slots or a touchscreen, but it does have an internal memory of 4 GB, enough to store almost 3,500 books.
The new Kindle supports a wide range of formats, including AZW, PDF, TXT, MOBI, PRC, AAX, AA, MP3; HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP. However, it is not compatible with the ePUB format.
The new Kindle also offers improved PDF handling capabilities, including the ability to view PDF files in landscape mode and zoom up to 300%. The rocker switch on the new Kindle is now almost completely flush with the device's surface, adding to its sleek design.
The Wi-Fi only version of the new Kindle costs $139, while the Kindle with 3G costs $189. These prices position the new Kindle as an affordable option for readers looking for an easy-to-use, portable e-reader.
While the new Kindle may not have all the bells and whistles of later models such as the Paperwhite 3 and Kindle 5, it offers a substantial step up from its predecessors in terms of speed, storage, battery life, display contrast, fonts, and connectivity options. For those who prefer a simple, no-frills e-reader, the new Kindle is a worthy addition to the Kindle family.
