Extend deletion possibilities: KakaoTalk expands delete timeframe to an entire day
KakaoTalk, the popular South Korean messaging app, has announced a significant update to its message deletion feature. The update extends the time frame for deleting sent messages from the previous 5 minutes to within 24 hours after sending.
The update aims to improve user experience by enhancing privacy and reducing conversational pressure. In group chats and other conversations, deleted messages will now display a neutral notice, "Message Deleted," without revealing who deleted the message. This is a departure from the previous version where the deleted message bubble identified the sender as the one deleting it.
The updated feature allows users to delete all types of messages, including text, images, videos, and emoticons, within the 24-hour window, regardless of whether recipients have read them. This change provides users with more flexibility in managing their conversations.
However, the update raises some concerns about criminal evidence preservation as deleted messages are removed from Kakao's servers after 3 days, making recovery impossible on the server side.
The update is part of Kakao's ongoing efforts to better reflect user needs by improving communication freedom and comfort. The rollout of the updated message deletion feature will be gradual, depending on device and operating system.
In March, Kakao also increased the maximum number of images that can be sent at once from 30 to 120 on KakaoTalk. This change further enhances the app's usability and user experience.
Kakao, a South Korean IT giant, has made this update available in the latest version of the KakaoTalk app. The company believes that this update will foster smoother communication by easing the pressure of conversations and providing users with more control over their messages.
