Farewell to Berlin's Iconic 'Diving Mask' S-Bahn: Last Journey Ahead

The final vehicles of the S-Bahn series 481, affectionately dubbed the 'diving mask' by fans, are set to make their last passenger journey. Known for its distinctive front window and classic green seats, this iconic train is a symbol of Berlin's public transport history. After 40 years of service, it's being retired to make way for modernized versions, with the last of the series expected back in service by April 2026.

The modernization program, initiated in 2015 with an expected service life until 2029, has seen a significant investment of 250 million euros. The renewed trains, now led by Christiane Flechtner, feature dark blue seats in the typical DB chequered design, video surveillance, and a slightly lighter exterior. Each car undergoes a three-month modernization process before returning to service.

The extension of the service life of the trains, now expected to last until 2037, is a testament to the success of the renovation. However, the cabling needs to be renewed in the near future due to decades of wear and tear on the insulations.

The last four-car train of the S-Bahn series 481 in its original livery marks the end of an era. Its retirement paves the way for modernized versions that promise improved safety and comfort for passengers. Despite the bittersweet farewell, the extended service life ensures that these iconic trains continue to serve Berlin for years to come.
