First peek at the reimagined Lilo & Stitch trailer brims with endearing extraterrestrial escapades
In a exciting twist, the anticipation for the live-action remake of the beloved animated movie, Lilo & Stitch, is at an all-time high. The teaser trailer, reminiscent of the original's marketing campaign, features the adorable, mischievous alien hopping through different Disney classics, much like before, but this time ahead of Mufasa.
The new version beautifully recreates some iconic scenes from the animated film and introduces Lilo, played by Maia Kealoha. With her heartwarming depiction, she's already won our affection when she makes a wish for a friend.
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, renowned for his heartwarming creation, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, this reimagining of the story revolves around Lilo, a Hawaiian girl, and her alien-dog fugitive, Stitch, who unexpectedly joins her family. The director's signature touch is evident throughout the trailer, which highlights the film's core message of ohana and the heartfelt connections between our main characters. Yet, it doesn't shy away from sci-fi action!
Original animator and voice actor Chris Sanders, from The Wild Robot, returns effortlessly to the Stitch voice, providing an authentic connection to the animated original for Kealoha's Lilo. The new scenes between these two characters provoke some big laughs! For instance, the dog booty-scootch moment and Stitch's scene where he decides he's no longer wearing a collar because he thinks of himself as a real boy. The dignified way Stitch handles the collar and his subsequent "woof" is a delightful touch, ensuring this isn't just a shot-for-shot remake.
Interestingly, the Lilo & Stitch universe undergoes an intriguing change with Pleakley and Jumba being played by their respective actors, Billy Magnussen (Aladdin) and Zach Galifianakis (A Wrinkle in Time), as humans in disguise, rather than aliens. While this might be a letdown for some who loved the drag Pleakley, we hope they continue to make a great couple.
The film's cast also includes Sydney Agudong as Nani, with Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the 2002 animated original, returning in a new role. Additionally, we have Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) as the Grand Councilwoman, and Courtney B. Vance (Grotesquerie) as Agent Cobra Bubbles, whose appearance at the end of the trailer suggests his pursuit of Stitch isn't letting up!
