Fremont Schools Pioneering Vehicle-to-Grid Charging for Buses
Fremont Unified School District is pioneering a sustainable initiative by transitioning to Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging for its school buses. This move, driven by both environmental goals and operational efficiency, is set to reduce net charging cost and support the local grid.
Tucson Electric Power is launching a similar V2G project this fall, while Fuse Power has already initiated the first V2G electric school bus project in Canada. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada are seeing increased traction of V2G in the school bus industry. Fremont's project, managed by The Mobility House's ChargePilot system, optimizes charging schedules based on utility commands and time-of-use electricity prices.
The district expects to reduce net charging cost by discharging energy back to the grid during peak demand periods and charging during off-peak times. This project is deployed under PG&E's Emergency Load Reduction Program, with insights expected by the end of next year. It requires careful coordination and planning with the utility Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).
Fremont's V2G project is a significant step towards sustainable transportation and grid support. By optimizing charging schedules and reducing net charging cost, the district is not only enhancing its operational efficiency but also contributing to a cleaner, more reliable grid.
