Future of Automobiles in 2025: Tesla and other automakers preparing to unveil their electric models, along with the introduction of "super-hybrids"
Tesla's Affordable Model Y Launching in Q4 2025
Tesla is set to introduce a more affordable electric vehicle, a stripped-down version of the Model Y, in the fourth quarter of 2025. Volume production is planned for the second half of the year, following initial builds in June 2025.
The new Model Y variant, which is expected to cost around $36,000 (leaked estimate), aims to target a more budget-conscious segment while maintaining production momentum. This strategy allows Tesla to focus on cost-efficient manufacturing without developing a completely new vehicle model.
In Europe, the emissions target for each manufacturer's fleet has been lowered to 94 grams of CO2 per WLTP kilometer for 2025. Established car manufacturers are facing high fines if they don't significantly increase their electric vehicle share this year or improve their CO2 balance through pooling with Tesla or others.
Tesla's rival, BYD, the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in China, offers the Yangwang U8 SUV, which has a 50 kWh battery providing 180 kilometers of range and a 2-liter turbo engine that increases the total range to 1,000 kilometers. China might be one step ahead in hybrid technology, with vehicles like the BYD Yangwang U8 being technically not PHEVs but EREVs, short for electric vehicles with range extenders.
Similar "Super Hybrids" could hit the market in the West by 2025, including models from Mercedes, Land Rover, and Toyota. Volkswagen plans to introduce no new electric cars to the European market in 2025, instead, the first deliveries of the large SUV Tayron are expected this year, including a plug-in hybrid with 100 km electric range.
Transport & Environment (T&E) expects the sales share of pure battery vehicles in Europe to increase to 24 percent in 2025. PHEVs are expected to account for 8 percent of the required reduction in EU fleet emissions, while pure electric vehicles will contribute 20 percent.
Interestingly, some exceptions are being removed from the stricter emission targets. Porsche is reconsidering its decision to offer the new Macan exclusively as a pure electric vehicle after sales of the E-sports car Taycan dropped by nearly 50 percent in 2024. The internal combustion engine will have a future at Porsche, and a Macan with such a drive is just as conceivable as a PHEV variant.
Tesla plans to launch at least one more affordable model this year, adding to its lineup of electric vehicles. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how companies like Tesla and BYD shape the future of transportation.
