Dog Tax at Record High - Feed Prices Continue to Rise - Germany's Dog Tax Revenue Hits Record 430 Million Euros

In Germany, dog tax revenues have surged over the past decade. In 2024, dog owners paid a record sum of around 430 million euros, a 2.2% increase from the previous year. This marks a 39% rise since 2014.

The cost of dog tax varies across municipalities. While most dogs are taxed between 90 and 144 euros, so-called 'fighting dogs' (Kampfhunde) attract higher fees. In Korntal-Münchingen, for instance, owners pay 500 euros per year, set to rise to 550 euros in 2026.

Pet food prices have also been on the rise. Since 2020, they've increased by more than a third (35.3%) in Germany. In 2024 alone, prices rose by an average of 2.3%, outpacing overall consumer price inflation (2.2%).

The increase in dog tax revenues reflects Germany's growing dog population. Meanwhile, rising pet food prices may impact owners' budgets. Despite these costs, dog ownership remains popular, with many considering pets as family members.
