Google Discontinues Steam Support for Chromebooks; Users to Rely on Android and Cloud Gaming Services Only

Google's ambitious venture to establish ChromeOS as a serious gaming platform, with the introduction of Steam for Chromebook Beta, is coming to an end. The beta program, launched in March 2022, will cease operation on January 1, 2026, marking the effective end of native PC gaming on ChromeOS through Steam.

The decision to discontinue the beta means that installed games on Steam for Chromebook will no longer be playable after the stated date. This move signifies a strategic shift by Google, as they are no longer offering a direct native replacement for running PC games on Chromebooks. Instead, they are focusing on cloud streaming services and Android games available via the Google Play Store.

Google has hinted that its future gaming strategy for ChromeOS will align more closely with Android’s architecture, but no specific successor to Steam support has been announced yet. This change in direction reflects a retreat from efforts to establish Chromebooks as native gaming devices with offline PC game support.

In the wake of this decision, users will need to pivot to alternative gaming avenues. Cloud gaming options like Nvidia GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Android titles will become the primary gaming options on ChromeOS. However, these options do not replicate the offline experience of native Steam gaming.

Google's decision to discontinue the Steam for Chromebook Beta effectively ends the experiment without a full public release of Steam for Chromebook. As we move forward, users can expect more updates, possibly at next year's Google I/O, as the company reshapes its approach in response to the learnings and user feedback from the beta program.
