Google's AI-Powered Image Modification Feature to Launch on Gemini App
Take Control of Your Photos with Gemini's AI Image Editing
Get ready to revolutionize your picture-editing experience with Gemini's AI-powered image editing feature! This cutting-edge technology allows you to seamlessly adjust both AI-generated images and your own snaps using conversation-based prompts. Previously available on Google AI Studio, it's now accessible to all Gemini users, across multiple languages.
The Power is in Your Words
This feature significantly lowers the barriers for editing photos. Communicate with the Gemini AI chatbot to create an image, or merely upload your pictures into the chat window, and let the AI do the work for you. The experience resembles the Google Pixel's Reimagine feature, which enables adding imaginary objects to real-life photos.
With Gemini's photo editing tools at your fingertips, you can easily replace objects within a picture, modify backgrounds, and even add entirely new elements from scratch. For instance, upload your photo and ask Gemini to change your hair color to see how stylish you'd look after a dye job. The AI also keeps track of your previous requests, so you can ask it to make multiple changes to your image across different messages. Plus, you can even use this feature to develop a story and images to go with it!
Ethics in AI Image Editing
While this feature offers countless opportunities, it raises certain ethical concerns. The most pressing is the potential for creating manipulated images that could harm individuals or businesses. To tackle this, Google incorporates invisible watermarks in all AI-generated images. In addition, Google is testing visible watermarks on these photos to make AI-edited images more easily identifiable.
Since the feature's rollout is just beginning, it may take some time before it becomes available to you. Unfortunately, it won't be accessible for Google Workspace and education users to prevent potential misuse.
Note: While there are safeguards in place, ethical risks around deepfakes still exist but are mitigated – though not completely eliminated – by watermarking.
