Grants awarded to LibertyStream and Wellspring Hydro for establishment of a lithium refining facility
LibertyStream Infrastructure Partners Strengthens Domestic Lithium Supply Chain
LibertyStream Infrastructure Partners has completed the construction of a commercial lithium carbonate refining unit at their Texas facility, with plans to relocate it to North Dakota upon the completion of a commercial direct lithium extraction (DLE) facility in the Williston Basin. The unit has the capacity to produce up to 10 tonnes per year of industrial-grade and battery-grade lithium carbonate.
The project is backed by a $700,000 grant from the state of North Dakota, part of a larger $7.5 million state-funded grant and loan facility provided to Wellspring Hydro, LibertyStream’s partner. Approximately $4.2 million remains available from this facility to support the build-out of commercial DLE operations in North Dakota. This state funding aims to promote renewable energy technologies, support local businesses, and leverage North Dakota’s workforce.
The refining unit is essential for supplying bulk lithium carbonate samples to customers, helping advance the domestic supply chain for critical minerals. LibertyStream and Wellspring plan to use the remaining funds for constructing the commercial DLE facility in the Williston Basin, where the refining unit will eventually operate.
Alex Wylie, President and CEO of LibertyStream, stated that the continued support from Wellspring Hydro indicates confidence in LibertyStream's DLE technology and a shared goal of strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical minerals. The financing for the unit comes from Wellspring's $10-million grant and loan facility.
The Refining Unit is expected to play a crucial role in providing the necessary lithium carbonate samples for future offtake agreement negotiations. According to LibertyStream, customers have expressed the need for bulk lithium carbonate samples for future offtake agreement negotiations. The Refining Unit is a significant step towards strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical minerals, as stated by LibertyStream.
