Group chat invitations on WhatsApp now come with a warning label
WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has rolled out a new security feature aimed at combating scams and protecting users from fraudulent group chat invitations. This feature, introduced globally in early August 2025, is now available in Germany as part of Meta Platforms' ongoing efforts to safeguard users [1][2].
The new security overview provides detailed information about a group chat inviting you, including the group's name, creation date, number of participants, the person who invited you, and the number of participants who are your contacts [1]. This transparency is designed to help users make informed decisions about joining group chats and to recognise potential scams before they become involved.
The overview also includes examples of common scams and safety tips to guide users [1][2]. Upon viewing the overview, you will find a button that allows you to leave the group immediately if you suspect it to be a scam. It's advisable to leave the group and block the inviter in such cases [3].
Moreover, notifications from unknown group chats will be muted until you actively confirm to join the group. This feature ensures that you are in control of the groups you join and helps to reduce the risk of unwanted interactions [1].
The overview also provides tips on how to restrict group chat invitations, giving you the power to manage your chat experience [5]. If, unfortunately, you fall victim to a scam, it's recommended to save the chat history or take screenshots and report it to the police [6].
This enhanced security feature is just one part of WhatsApp's commitment to user safety. As the digital landscape evolves, so too does the need for robust security measures. By staying vigilant and informed, we can all play a part in protecting ourselves and our communities online.
