In a strategic move reflecting the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the tech industry, major companies like Alphabet and Meta are significantly increasing their investments in AI.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced an $85 billion capital expenditure plan for 2025, with a substantial portion allocated to servers and data centers to support AI infrastructure. This investment is crucial for maintaining its competitive edge in AI-driven services like Google Cloud and Search. Alphabet's AI spending includes over $25 billion for AI-related data centers and infrastructure in the U.S.

Meta, on the other hand, has not disclosed specific figures for its AI investments in 2025. However, the company is actively investing in AI to enhance its services and keep pace with competitors. In a notable move, Meta has established a new department called "Superintelligence Labs."

The increased investment in AI by companies like Alphabet, Meta, and others is driving an "AI gold rush," with significant venture capital flowing into AI startups. This trend is expected to continue as AI becomes more integral to tech companies' strategies. The competition between these companies is escalating, with each attempting to outdo others in AI capabilities, from cloud computing to consumer products.

Alphabet's strong performance in AI-driven sectors, such as Google Cloud, positions it as a leader. However, rivals like Microsoft (with OpenAI) and Meta are ramping up their AI capabilities. This competitive environment is fostering innovation, with AI tools becoming more powerful and accessible, enhancing business efficiency and consumer experience across various industries.

The significant investments in AI infrastructure indicate a long-term commitment to transforming core business models, impacting sectors like advertising, cloud computing, and more. However, these investments also raise questions about short-term profitability and the sustainability of these investments, especially in a competitive landscape.

Notably, Google's AI function, "AI Overviews," now has 2 billion users, an increase from 1.5 billion in May. Google's AI functions contributed to the strong growth in its core search business. The company's stock initially fluctuated after Alphabet's investment announcement but quickly made up the loss and was up around two percent in after-hours trading.

Google's core search business increased by over eleven percent year-over-year, with search revenues for the second quarter reaching $54.19 billion, exceeding the expected $52.85 billion. A new search function called "AI Mode," launched this summer, already has 100 million users in the US and India.

Meanwhile, Meta is offering leading AI researchers offers of 100 million dollars or more to join its team. Meta's AI spending is expected to be a significant factor in its ability to compete with Google and other tech giants.

In the second quarter, Alphabet exceeded expectations, with revenues reaching $96.42 billion, compared to the expected $93.94 billion. Alphabet's earnings per share for the second quarter were $2.31, exceeding the expected $2.17. YouTube's ad revenues for the second quarter were $9.79 billion, surpassing the expected $9.56 billion.

However, Alphabet stocks were down around 2.5 percent shortly after the release of the quarterly results due to concerns about increased investment spending. Alphabet will increase investment spending by ten billion US dollars this year, mainly due to a shortage of chips for training and operating Google's latest AI models.

The increased investment in AI by major tech companies is intensifying competition and driving innovation, transforming both their internal operations and the broader tech industry. As AI becomes more integral to these companies' strategies, it is expected that the race to dominate this technology will continue.

What will be Meta's AI investment figure for 2025, and how does it compare to Alphabet's substantial allocation of resources for AI-related data centers and infrastructure?

Investing in AI technology is not just about financing AI projects, but also about employing top AI researchers to boost AI capabilities, as Meta is doing by offering them millions of dollars.
