New Experimental Guitar-Based Kontakt Instrument, Ruins, Unveiled by Slate + Ash

Slate + Ash, a Bristol-based sound studio, has recently released an innovative experimental guitar-based Kontakt instrument called Ruins. This multi-track design offers advanced sequencing and sound manipulation capabilities, making it a unique addition to any musician's arsenal.

Curated and produced by Randall Dunn at his Williamsburg studio Circular Ruin, Ruins features six avant-garde players, including Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley, Oren Ambarchi, David Torn, Bill Horist, Ben Greenberg, and Arjan Miranda. Each performance was recorded using multiple mic positions and treatments, resulting in a rich and varied sound library.

Ruins runs on Kontakt 7.10.7 or higher, or the free Kontakt Player, and supports both macOS and Windows. It includes five tracks, each with its own algorithmic sequencer, polyphonic sound engine, audio effects chain, and a dedicated XY touchpad for expressive control. The library contains 4,636 sounds, divided into single and multi-samples, providing a wealth of sonic possibilities.

The sounds can be processed through delay, reverb, filter, modulation, and tape emulation, allowing for a wide range of textures and resonances. Ruins comes with a selection of 250 curated presets, making it easy for users to quickly find the perfect sound for their project.

One standout feature of Ruins is its dual-layer architecture, which allows for the combination of multiple samples and playback using Slate + Ash's sophisticated playback engine. This engine features a multi-loop system, asynchronous repetition, granular manipulation, and deep modulation, offering unprecedented control over the instrument's sound.

In addition, almost every parameter can be modulated via Ruins' LFO, step sequencer, or MIDI CC, providing endless opportunities for sound design. A preset demo for Ruins is available to watch on Slate + Ash's website, giving potential users a taste of what this powerful instrument can do.

Ruins is available at an introductory price of £179. More information about Ruins and Slate + Ash can be found on their website. With its advanced features and rich sound library, Ruins is sure to be a valuable tool for any experimental musician.

Technology and entertainment converge in the form of the new experimental guitar-based instrument, Ruins, recently released by Slate + Ash. This innovative Kontakt instrument offers a unique blend of music and technology, with advanced sequencing and sound manipulation capabilities, making it an exciting tool for experimental musicians.
