H2-Trust: Blockchain Revolutionizing Green Hydrogen Documentation
H2-Trust, a pioneering digital solution for green hydrogen, is poised to transform the industry. Backed by a €2 million grant, this project aims to automate documentation and bolster transparency using blockchain technology. Initial tests with industry partners are slated for mid-2026.
H2-Trust, part of the DUH-IT research project, is designed to be an open-source solution, circumventing lock-in effects and fostering industry collaboration. It aspires to become a market alternative within five years, offering a provider-neutral and application-oriented solution.
The project, funded by the EFRE/JTF program NRW, will run from March 2024 to February 2027. It seeks to automate the intricate task of documenting RED criteria for green hydrogen, despite varying production configurations and dependencies. This is accomplished through a sophisticated blockchain system that ensures data is transparent, immutable, and traceable from production to the end user.
The 'BlockcH2ain' transfer circle has already integrated regional companies, showcasing industry interest in digital product passes for hydrogen. The digital product passport provides flexibility with three data collection methods: manual entry, CSV file upload, and interfaces to IoT gateways, catering to diverse plant configurations and sensor equipment.
H2-Trust is set to test its prototype with initial industry partners by mid-2026, with two small-scale production facilities already in talks for piloting. Despite the complexity of automating RED criteria documentation, H2-Trust aims to become the 'digital fingerprint' for hydrogen, enhancing transparency and automating regulatory compliance in convoluted supply chains.
