The Hamburg Metropolitan Region is set to make a significant mark in the world of renewable energy, particularly in the production and supply of green hydrogen. This was evident at the Hannover Trade Fair, where the region presented itself as a future green hydrogen hub.

The region, known for its unique location advantages for the generation of renewable energies and a large demand potential for hydrogen, especially from established industrial companies, showcased twelve hydrogen projects selected as Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI Hydrogen). These projects included the Green Hydrogen Hub Hamburg, the aviation project "Wiplin", and the infrastructure project "HH-Win" in the Hamburg harbor.

One of the highlights was the 100-megawatt electrolyzer, currently under construction on the site of the former Moorburg power plant in the port area. Upon completion, this electrolyzer will supply local industry with green hydrogen, contributing significantly to the region's goal of a climate-friendly transformation of industry.

Schwerin's hydrogen electrolyzer plant is also making strides in conquering the market, further boosting the region's green hydrogen production capabilities.

The city of Hamburg, along with its partners, is driving the decarbonization of industry and the development of a green hydrogen economy. This is evident in the initiatives taken by companies like HHLA, which has initiated a new hydrogen cluster.

An interactive touch table debuted at the Hamburg trade fair stand, providing information on the advantages of the metropolitan region and important projects. Online participation in the fair was also possible, with offerings such as exhibitor livestreams, matchmaking, and business dating.

The world's most important industrial fair was held on-site for the first time since the pandemic, providing a platform for the region to showcase its commitment to a sustainable future. As Senator for the Economy and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Michael Westhagemann, stated, "The north will set standards for the climate-friendly transformation of industry with wind power and hydrogen."

The Hamburg Metropolitan Region, with its strategic location as an important import logistics hub, is building up a hydrogen economy of short distances. This approach aims to reduce carbon emissions while meeting the region's growing demand for hydrogen.

The Hannover Trade Fair served as a testament to Hamburg's key role in achieving climate protection goals and the success of the energy transition in Germany. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region, with its green hydrogen hub, is poised to play a crucial role in this endeavour.
